The Jim Hebden Chemistry Bursary

It is our pleasure to announce that the 2013 recipient of the Jim Hebden Chemistry Bursary is Alicia Myers of Princeton Secondary School.

Ms. Myers, who intends to study chemistry and physics at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick starting in September, was recognized for her academic performance and outstanding service to her community.

The panel of judges was overwhelmed not only by the number of students applying for the bursary, but also by the quality of their applications. “I think any of the applicants would be worthy in one way or another,” stated Jim Hebden. “These young people are to be commended for maintaining excellent grades while, at the same time, exhibiting a high level of involvement in their communities." The judges express thanks to all of the students for their submissions.

The applicants were asked to provide a paragraph on advice they would give younger students about studying chemistry and another describing their service to their school and/or community.

Ms. Myers has a remarkable record of service to others. She is a member of the Princeton Ground Search and Rescue and a volunteer teacher for the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiers. This past winter she worked one-on-one with a young woman and was able to help her realize her dream of participating in the association’s Festival at Sun Peaks. In addition to her participation in initiatives such as Free the Children and We Day, Ms. Myers has volunteered to care for endangered turtles in Mexico and collected 200 pairs of shoes for residents of the orphanage in India that she volunteered at.

In her message to younger students, Ms. Myers described the chemistry laboratory as a “fertile classroom for breeding fun and fact finding experiments.” She noted that chemistry is a part of everything around us, and advised younger students that the study of chemistry is essential to further studies in any of the other sciences.

Ms. Myers received enthusiastic support from her chemistry teacher, Crystal Larsen, who described her student as having a “commitment to excellence” and a “natural concern for others.” The judges wish to thank Ms. Larsen and all of the other teachers who made time to write the letters of support for their students.

The Jim Hebden Chemistry Bursary is a $500 award given annually by Western Campus Resources, the exclusive distributor of Jim Hebden’s two bestselling Chemistry Workbooks. Mr. Hebden is a former BC Science Teacher of the Year who taught chemistry for three decades in Kamloops.
